What is DNA Siblingship Testing?
Siblingship Testing simply means to "establish the probability of relationship between brothers and sisters". This type of DNA test involves testing two or more people who potentially share the same biological parent or parents.
Siblingship Testing can be used to resolve the following circumstances:
- Distinguish between half and full Brothers and Sisters
- Confirm relationship after being separated at birth, or during childhood, through adoption or other circumstances
- Illegitimate offspring proving family relations for situations such as inheritance rights, etc.
- For general self-knowledge and peace of mind
How accurate is a Siblingship Test?
Test accuracy is based on solely on the genetic information found within the tested individuals. Since Siblings have the same Parent(s), they have matching genes much more often than do two unrelated individuals. When matches between two potential Siblings are found, calculations are made to determine the probability that a Sibling relationship exists. For this reason, the laboratory encourages the testing of additional family members, if available, in addition to the Possible Siblings, to order to improve the ease and accuracy of the test. (If two or more people suspect themselves as siblings, one way to find conclusive results is to be tested against the Possible Common Mother or Father, if they are available to donate samples.) However, in the case of adopted individuals, especially from another country, it is not required.
Therefore: Unlike Paternity or Maternity Tests, a Siblingship Test cannot be determined as conclusive (certain). Instead, the laboratory breaks down the genetic profile of each individual and determines the probability of relationship.
Types of Siblingship Tests
Two different levels of Siblingship DNA testing is available:
- PCR Method: This basic testing method analyzes 15 different genetic sites and is the standard testing method.
- RFLP Method: This more extensive testing method analyzes more than 15 genetic sites and provides more genetic information, which will improve accuracy of the test. This is an add on to the PCR Method, meaning it is "in addition to" the PCR Method.
