How to Perform An Emergency DNA Collection & DNA Swabbing

It’s an EMERGENCY! I need to get a DNA Sample right nowWhat do I do?

Possible Example Scenarios:

1) You find yourself with a child and don’t have time to go to a clinic or buy a kit. You need to get DNA now!

2) You are with a possible parent in the hospital and need to collect their DNA. You just want to know before it’s too late.

3) It’s a weekend, no one is open and this is your opportunity.

What do you do? You make your own DNA swabs!

Don’t spend $30 at the drug store to buy a cardboard box with 2 swabs inside and then find out you have to pay for the DNA test on top of that; it’s ridiculous! If you need a reliable DNA Test that is for your knowledge only, and you can’t wait for a clinic appointment or for a kit to arrive in the mail, we can help you make your own swabs! Read below to find out how.

(If you need a court-admissible, legally binding DNA test with a notarized result, please give us a call. We might still be able to help you in your emergency, but it is more complicated and it’s best that we speak with you in order to determine if we are able to make it work.)

Below are instructions on how to collect the DNA Sample(s). After you are done you will have Two DNA Testing Options

1) Order a DNA Testing Kit that we ship to you to you by USPS Priority Mail for free or by FedEx for a fee.  You will receive swabs for the other person(s) to be included in the DNA Test, instructions, a test submission form and a results release instruction form.  It will also include pre-paid shipping back to the lab.

2) Order an Electronic DNA Test and we will email the documents and shipping label to you. You will print out the instructions, submission form, results release instruction form and shipping label. You will then include your own swabs collected in the manner that we breakdown for you below. You will have to obtain either your own USPS Priority mail envelope or FedEx envelope. If you want to ship back by regular mail and save money you are welcome to do so. Will will give you $5 off  the testing fee.

Do-It-Yourself Collection Instructions

You will need the following supplies:

• Four (4) unused sterile out-of-the package cotton-tipped swabs, such as “Q-tips”, for each person.

• Unused, plain paper envelops, one for each person. On the envelope you will write the name of the person, who they are, such as:

Name: Adam Smith                                  Name: John Smith
Relationship: Child               -or-               Relationship: Father
Sex: Male                                                 Race: Caucasian

Why use paper envelopes? DO NOT place DNA swabs in plastic or a zip lock! The reason we request you use a paper envelope is so that the swab can dry. If the swab cannot breathe, it will not dry. If it does not dry, the mouth bacteria will not die and can grow and destroy the DNA on the swab by eating it. The kits that you buy provide paper envelopes. It is the absolute standard for all DNA tests. Don’t believe everything you see on T.V.!

How To Perform The DNA Collection / How To Swab A Mouth For DNA Test

• Try not to eat food or brush your teeth at least 30 minutes prior to cheek swabbing.

• Make sure a baby has not breast fed at least 30 minutes prior to cheek swabbing unless the mother is also being swabbed and included in the test.

• DO NOT TOUCH COTTON TIP with fingers. You may wear latex gloves, if you desire. If you do not wear gloves wash your hands before and  after each swabbing.

• Cut one end off of each Q-tip so the lab knows which side to test.

• Conduct swabbing on each person, one at a time, so there are no mix ups.

• Use two swabs for each side of the mouth (total of 4), one at a time. You can use more if you want to, but it isn’t necessary.

• Place swab inside mouth, press firmly, and rub up and down and all around the cheek for 15 seconds each swab just like you would do when you brush your teeth. This will slough off cheek cells found inside the mouth and those cells contain all of your genetic information.

• Place swabs into an unused paper envelope and seal. Do not lick envelope unless it’s your own sample!

• If needed, move on to next person and repeat.

How To Store the DNA Samples:

If you are not sending the DNA samples right away then you need to store the envelopes with the completed swabs in a cool dry location such as a drawer out of the sun, or a closet. Do not refrigerate or freeze! You want the swabs to sit in the envelope and slowly dry out. If they are properly stored in this manner then they will last for a year or even much longer!

Remember: DO NOT place DNA swabs in plastic or a zip lock! The reason we request you use a paper envelope is so that the swab can dry. If the swab cannot breathe, it will not dry. If it does not dry, bacteria will not die and can destroy the DNA on the swab. The kits that you buy provide paper envelopes. It is the absolute standard for all DNA tests. Don’t believe everything you see on T.V.!
